What Are Your Limits?
Nearly everything in the world has a limit. You can drive to San Francisco from New York, but the ocean limits you from driving to Tokyo. You don’t jump off a cliff because you know you can’t fly. There are other kinds of limits in our lives. They are set by our parents, friends, society, and government. For example, our parents may tell us what time to go to bed at night. Our friends may tell us to act or dress a certain way. Society tells us not to eat soup with our fingers. The government sets speed limits, among other laws.
We also set limits for ourselves. Some of these help us. For example, we decide not to stay up all night watching TV on the day before an important test. Or we limit the amount of sugar we eat. Some limits keep us from doing things we really want to do. But we can choose to push our limits. Jim Abbott was born without a hand. He didn’t let that stop him from becoming a pitcher for the California Angels baseball team.
